Moong Dal

Serves 4 – 6

1 cup yellow split peas (MOONG DAL)
1 tsp. ground turmeric
6 cups water
3 hot green peppers, halved, seeds and membrane removed
4 cloves
1 tbsp. curry leaves
salt to taste
4 tbsp butter
1/2 tsp. whole cumin seeds
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp. chopped fresh ginger

  1. Bring the dal, turmeric, water, peppers, cloves, curry leaves and salt to a boil on high heat. Lower heat to medium and cook till the dal is tender. This should take 20-30 minutes.
  2. Heat the butter in a small saucepan on high heat.  Add the cumin, garlic and ginger; stir fry for 2 minutes.  Add to the dal; stir; and cook on medium high heat for 2 minutes more.
  3. Serve hot.

Vasantha Anand says this is what they give you in India when you are sick.  MOONG DAL is yellow split peas.  Vasantha says you can omit the curry leaves.  They don't use them.  She also said you could add a little lemon juice to this mix.
